Halopen for writers

The best Mac dictation tool for writers

Halopen captures the voice of the writer. Verbatim by default — every contraction, every aside, every sentence-shape that came out of the mouth before the fingers could catch it.

Free forever for the first 8,000 words a month · macOS 14.0+ · Apple Silicon & Intel

Why this fits

Halopen, paired with writers.

Halopen is a native macOS dictation app built for working writers — verbatim by default in Scrivener, iA Writer, Ulysses, Bear, Obsidian, Pages, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Notion, Apple Notes, Day One, and Drafts. Hold the function key, speak the paragraph as it forms — contractions, false starts you kept on purpose, the aside that lands mid-sentence — release; the prose appears at the cursor on Apple Silicon and Intel running macOS Sonoma or later.

Writers know what every other dictation user eventually figures out: the voice is the asset. The cadence of a sentence forming, the contraction, the false start that the writer kept on purpose, the aside that landed mid-paragraph and made the paragraph work — all of it is the writer’s. None of it should be sanded by a tool.

Halopen is the Mac dictation tool built on this premise. Hold the function key, draft into any writing surface — Bear, Obsidian, Scrivener, iA Writer, Pages, Word, Google Docs, Notion, Apple Notes, Day One, Things — and watch the prose land at the cursor exactly as you spoke it. Verbatim by default. The writer is the author.

The workflow

How to use Halopen with writers.

  1. 1

Open your writing surface of choice

Halopen works in all of them.

  2. 2

    Hold the function key

    Halopen records.

  3. 3

    Speak the paragraph

First-draft prose is best dictated; the inner critic is busy listening for the next word, not editing the last.

  4. 4

    Release

Text lands. The voice is intact.

  5. 5

    Edit

Editing happens in the writing app, on your terms, after the draft exists.

What matters for writers

The Halopen features that earn their place.

  • Verbatim register

The way you speak is the way it lands. Casual or formal, plain or ornate — Halopen captures it without flattening.

  • Long-form drafting at speech speed

A 1,500-word first draft takes 10 minutes to dictate; an hour or more to type. The draft exists; editing comes next.

  • Works in every writing app

Bear, Obsidian, Scrivener, iA Writer, Pages, Word, Google Docs, Notion, Apple Notes, Day One, Things, Drafts — all of them.

  • Multilingual

Code-switching between languages mid-paragraph for bilingual writers — handled natively.

  • Punctuation by inference

Halopen reads cadence to decide where to put commas and periods, so dictated paragraphs read like written ones without you saying every mark aloud.

  • Free for 8,000 words a month

A short story. A long essay. Pro is $19/mo or $179/yr for unlimited.

A real Halopen session

A first-draft fiction paragraph dictated into Bear:

Halopen output

"By the time the bus pulled into Charlevoix the snow had stopped and the sky was that color it gets in March, the color of a thing that hasn’t decided what it’s going to be. Margot stepped down with her duffel and looked around like the town was a question she was being asked to answer. She didn’t answer it. She pulled the cigarette out of her pocket, looked at it for a long time, then put it back."

  • · Atmospheric scene-setting preserved
  • · "the color of a thing that hasn’t decided what it’s going to be" — exact aphoristic phrasing landed
  • · Character action ("looked at it for a long time, then put it back") captured precisely
  • · Voice consistent across paragraph

Why Halopen

The dictation tool that earns its place.

Writing is a craft and the writer’s voice is the craft’s most precious asset. Halopen treats the voice as something to preserve, not something to clean up. That’s the difference between a draft that requires a heavy editing pass and a draft that already sounds like you.

For the writers who draft by voice — fiction, essays, journals, blog posts, customer emails — Halopen makes the dictation step disappear. Hold the key, speak, release. The cursor receives what you said. You go back to writing.

Halopen for writers — FAQ

Questions worth answering.

Does Halopen work in Scrivener, iA Writer, Pages, Word, and Google Docs?

Yes. Halopen is system-wide; it works in any Mac app or browser tab where text input is accepted. All of those writing surfaces qualify.

Will Halopen change my writing style?

No. Halopen captures what you said, not what it thinks you meant. Your style is preserved exactly as you spoke it.

Does Halopen handle filler words and false starts?

Halopen captures speech as spoken. Many writers find that a filler word or two left in is a feature — it preserves the rhythm of how the sentence formed. Filler is optional in editing; voice is not.

Can I dictate punctuation explicitly?

Yes. Say "comma," "period," "question mark," "open quote," "close quote" — Halopen handles them. Halopen also infers punctuation from speech cadence; many writers find inference is sufficient.

How long can I dictate in one session?

A single hold runs up to ten minutes — comfortable for a paragraph, a meeting note, or a long thought. For longer drafting sessions, release between thoughts so each take lands at the cursor, then hold again to continue. There is no daily, weekly, or monthly word cap on Pro.

How much does Halopen cost?

Halopen Free is 8,000 words a month, forever. Pro is $19/mo or $179/yr for unlimited.
